Everything You Should Know Before Doing The Narrows Hike

There are few places on Earth as beautiful and majestic as Zion National Park. And, of course, one of the best ways to experience the park is by hiking through it. The Narrows hike is one of the most popular trails in Zion and for good reason. This strenuous hike takes you through some of the most stunning scenery in the park, including a slot canyon that is only 30 feet wide in some places.

Important things to consider

Before you attempt the Narrows hike, there are a few things you should know. First of all, this is not a hike for beginners. The Narrows is a challenging trail with some steep and slippery sections. If you’re not confident in your hiking abilities, it’s best to stick to one of the park’s easier trails.

Second, you will need to obtain a permit before attempting the Narrows hike. This is because the trail crosses through private property and the park wants to limit the number of people on the trail at any given time. Permits are available at the visitor center and must be obtained in person.

Third, you will need to be prepared for extreme weather conditions. The Narrows hike is located in a slot canyon, which means that there is very little shade. This makes the trail incredibly hot during the summer months. In fact, the park service recommends that hikers attempt the Narrows hike during the cooler months of April, May, September, and October.

Fourth, you will need to bring plenty of water with you on the Narrows hike. At least two quarts per person is recommended. This is because it can be difficult to find places to refill your water bottle while on the trail.

Finally, you will need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. The Narrows hike is located in a remote area of the park and help may not be immediately available if you run into trouble. Be sure to let someone know where you’re going before you set out on the trail and be sure to stick to the marked path.

What to look out for

Now that you know what to expect, you’re ready to tackle the Narrows hike. Start by picking up your permit at the visitor center. Then, head to the trailhead, which is located at the end of the Riverside Walk trail. The first section of the Narrows hike is relatively easy, but it does get more difficult as you get further into the canyon.

As you hike, keep an eye out for beautiful rock formations and wildlife. The Narrows is home to a variety of plant and animal life, so you’re sure to see something new around every bend. It is important that you are respectful of the environment, however. Be sure to stay on the trail and do not disturb any of the plants or animals you see.

The hike does have a portion that will require you to walk through water, so be sure to wear shoes that you don’t mind getting wet. The water can be quite cold, even in the summer months, so be prepared for that as well. Make sure that everything you bring is okay to get a little wet, and that it is light enough to hold over your head during this portion of the hike.

Once you reach the end of the Narrows hike, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Zion National Park. Be sure to take plenty of pictures to remember this amazing experience. The Narrows hike is a challenging but rewarding experience. Be sure to follow the tips listed above and you’re sure to have a great time on the trail.
